A Very Weird Victory

Here's what counts as a win at FAU...

The Student Affairs vice president summons you to his office, doesn't tell you what he wants, forbids you from bringing a witness, issues a short statement, and refuses to answer any questions.

Still, when UP editor Karla Bowsher met with VP Charles Brown yesterday, she left a happy woman. And a slightly confused one.

After all, Brown did say: "I just want to clarify this whole thing about advisers – you know, Michael being a volunteer adviser. He can be a volunteer adviser, no problem. I don't care who you talk to. This isn't a battle."

Brown repeated it often enough for Karla to believe him. And she did bring a witness: managing editor Gideon Grudo. Brown at first said no to that, but when Karla threatened to walk away, he relented.

But Brown didn't budge when Karla started interviewing him. He kept repeating "no comment" while Karla kept firing questions at him. Listen to one of the oddest college journalism exchanges I've ever heard. (It starts slow and ends strange.) Then read Karla's firsthand account of her surreal seven-minute meeting.

TOMORROW: Going to the tape again.
