Sometime today, FAU will post a job for an assistant director of student media. Originally, that was announced as a full-time adviser to replace my part-time fired self.
But the public outcry and ridicule over the salary ($33,000 starting) and required experience (two years) forced Student Affairs to up the ante.
Now the salary will top out at $43,000 and the minimum experience will range from 4-6 years.
But the job responsibilities still have nothing to do with journalism. Quoting from the last draft of the posting I could get my hands on...
Create and develop training programs for Student Media staff and insure [sic] timely production for media content. Additional responsibilities will include arranging equipment purchases, maintaining inventory and providing technical oversight of production studios. This position will work with student leaders and the Director of Student Media to develop revenue streams.
Speaking of postings, Student Affairs has released a "Student Media Statement" that explains its side of this twisted situation. Here are the first two sentences...
The department of Student Media Department, in order to position itself for future growth, is making changes to its organizational structure. This change creates a structure that moves the adviser responsibilities from a part-time to a full-time model.
