Next week, FAU starts looking for a
full-time adviser for its TV and radio stations – one who will "assist" the newspaper.
Starting salary: $33,000 to $35,000 a year.
That's $15.80 to $16.80 an hour. Less than a starting reporter at the nearest daily, the SunSentinel.
As a half-time adviser, I was paid $25,000 a year. So for double the hours, my successor will earn only one-third more money. But at least he won't have to know very much.
Required professional experience: 2 years.
When I was fired, Student Affairs said it wanted to "move student media in a new direction." I never realized that direction was "down."
Less hourly pay for less experience? How does that "enhance communication and learning opportunities for students," as Student Affairs told the Student Press Law Center yesterday?
I wasn't mad about getting fired. But this makes me mad.
